ByPauline goes to market…

The first show for ByPauline. I am participating in ARTist Saturday today at Armature here in Bend, OR. After considering traditional vendor displays using tables and shelves, I decided to create a flexible, affordable, alternative installation using standard cardboard boxes. I created the display for my 6×6 space with 12″square boxes – some open and some closed. The system is secured with blue painter’s tape and binder clips so the boxes can easily be dismantled and reused. My Plicious clothing is hung on an Aspen branch that is balanced on top of a stack of boxes and then secured with blue zip ties. ByPauline Instagram images adorn some of the empty box faces. I am promoting myself as an architect/designer/artist/maker who creates custom handmade pieces for special events and holidays. So I am displaying a variety of things as “samples” for what I can make. I am also offering services as a creative consultant to help individuals and groups, young and old, to realize their vision for unique handmade items.

Natural branch chandelier…

Every Christmas, I alter our holiday decor a bit. This year I created a “chandelier” by suspending a juniper branch over our dining table and decorating it with handmade felted balls, Froebel stars, and crystal ornaments. The benefit of using a natural object for decor is that I can return it to nature when I am finished with it. And if I am lucky, this particular branch can be “found” again next holiday season.

Handmade decor for a Halloween party…

Happy Halloween! We invited kids over for a pre-trick-or-treat party. Simple decorations included ripped cheesecloth crawling with plastic spiders, a pumpkin vomiting fruit, bone-shaped bread, bleeding candles, black daisies, hanging paper bats, and lots of rubber roaches. Note to self: take more pictures with a better camera.

Large t-shirt = Mini Maxi-dress

Stella asked me to make her an upcycled dress rather than more tutus.  Style upgrade. I altered an XL men’s t-shirt into a long sleeved maxi-dress with raw edges and an added panel at the chest to fill the plunging V-neck.

For a little income this summer, my 10 yr old daughter chose to make and sell handmade giant bubble wands and homemade giant bubble juice at a local music festival. So of course I excitedly helped with research, design, and graphics. What a fun alternative to the usual lemonade stand. Even my 4 year had great success making giant bubbles with the homemade juice.

We are sending Grandpa Murray love and wellness in the form of a popup card. I’ve made this heart hug popup for my husband before, but the concept never gets old. Stella scribble colored the card while Adin stamped the text, thereby infusing it with their love and intention. Feel better soon! We love you Grandpa!

I usually try to make a handmade gift for my daughters on their birthdays, even though it is hard to compete with Lego and Barbie.  But this rainbow tutu was worn with style and flair by the birthday girl on her special day. Since I wanted to emphasize the pattern of the rainbow, I cut one yard of tulle in each of the seven colors into four inch wide strips. The skirt was made using the “no-sew” method, or by tying individual strips onto an elastic waistband using a larks head knot. I did end up sewing the strips in place with a running stitch and adding a bright blue wide satin bow.  More satin ribbons of varying widths, and in every color of the rainbow, adorn the length of the skirt.

My daughter is turning four soon and we are planning her birthday party. We chose to make hand kites as party favors. I bought some 3” wooden rings online. They are finished with coconut oil that I just slathered on by hand and wiped off with a rag. The rings are decorated with satin ribbon of varying widths in the seven colors of the rainbow. Each ribbon is two yards long and is tied using a larks head knot and half square knot. Super easy to make and lots of fun for dancing and creative movement.
